Tips for Buying a Cake for the First Birthday

The first birthday cake is one of the most important parts of the celebration. That picture of baby in front of a cake appears in almost every family photo album. Before you buy a cake for your baby's first birthday, you should:
  • Check with local grocery stores to see if they offer babies a free first birthday cake. You may even discover that two separate local grocery store chains give free cakes to families celebrating a first birthday. Just in case the store asks to see proof that you have a first birthday coming soon, bring along baby's birth certificate when you place your order and when you pick up the cake.
  • Plan on baby making a mess of the cake if you set it close enough for her to touch it. Buying a second cake lets baby have her cake and allow grownups to eat cake, too. If you don't have a separate cake for grownups to eat, cutting a big slice for baby to play in and keeping the rest of the cake out of reach is a good idea.
  • Think plain and simple with a first birthday cake. Yellow cake that is lightly frosted with vanilla icing is much better for little bellies than double chocolate fudge cake with raspberry filling.
