May 9, 2008, Newsletter Issue #215: Donīt Make One Gift More Special

Tip of the Week

To completely avoid unkind responses when your child receives birthday presents that are unwanted or that they already have, consider what professional party-thrower, Jeremy Sage does: Donīt allow the children to open the presents at the party. Children put too much emphasis on competing for the best gifts, and many children donīt know how to react to some situations that arise when they receive gifts.

Place a large bag or box by the door to place gifts as kids arrive. That way, the gifts are recognized but not emphasized, and no gifts are singled out as extra special.
